For generations, the Cummins & District War Memorial Swimming Pool has been an important part of community life on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula. Serving local families, schools, swimming programs and visitors to the region, the pool has provided a place for recreation, water safety education and community connection for decades.

As the facility aged, maintaining the existing swimming pool and its infrastructure became increasingly challenging. Rather than replacing the facility entirely, the project presented an opportunity to preserve and renew the existing asset, extending its serviceable life while creating a safer, more accessible and reliable swimming facility for the community.

The extensive redevelopment addressed both the structure of the pool and the infrastructure that keeps it operating. Works included significant structural remediation to the existing pool shell, upgrades to ageing plant and filtration systems, improvements to the pool hydraulics and associated aquatic infrastructure, together with the refurbishment of existing pool finishes. Accessibility was also significantly improved through the construction of a new pool entry ramp and removal of the raised pool edging, providing easier and more inclusive access to the water.

Working with an ageing pool structure brought a unique set of challenges. Unlike constructing a new facility from the ground up, existing conditions needed to be carefully assessed as works progressed, with solutions developed around infrastructure that had already been in service for decades. The project required specialist aquatic knowledge to determine what could be retained, what required remediation and where upgrades were necessary to achieve the required performance and longevity.

The result is more than a refurbished swimming pool. The redevelopment has breathed new life into the Cummins & District War Memorial Swimming Pool, improving its safety, accessibility and operational reliability while preserving a facility with longstanding significance to the local community.
