Located in the heart of Western Australia’s East Kimberley, Kununurra Leisure Centre has long provided an important place for sport, recreation and community connection. With the existing aquatic facilities reaching the end of their serviceable life, the redevelopment presented an opportunity to completely transform the centre’s aquatic offering and create modern infrastructure capable of supporting the growing community for decades to come.

At the centre of the redevelopment is a new eight-lane, 50-metre Myrtha swimming pool – the first 50m pool in the Kimberley region. The new aquatic facilities also include a leisure pool incorporating three walking and light-exercise lanes, a dedicated learn-to-swim area, turbo channel, water features and beach entry, complementing the existing water playground completed in 2022.

Behind the finished pools sits an extensive network of specialist aquatic infrastructure. The redevelopment included a new plantroom and balance tank, chemical storage facilities and the hydraulic and water treatment systems required to operate a contemporary aquatic facility. Accessibility was also an important consideration, with universal pool access and a dedicated Changing Places facility helping create a centre that can be enjoyed by a broader cross-section of the community.

Delivering a major aquatic project in Kununurra’s remote East Kimberley location brought another dimension to the works. Materials, specialist equipment, trades and construction activities required careful planning and coordination, while the region’s distinct wet and dry seasons also had to be considered throughout the construction program. Site preparation included drainage works and measures to protect the site ahead of the wet season, highlighting some of the unique conditions involved in delivering infrastructure in this part of Australia.
