With views overlooking Glenelg Marina and the Gulf of St Vincent, Oaks Glenelg Liberty Suites in South Australia comprises 3 pools – a lap pool, plunge pool and spa. The pools were built around 20 years ago by Statewide Pool Services, Hydrilla’s founding company. The original infrastructure (from around 20 years prior) was a unique set up; all three pools were operating on one system. This means that if a fault or issue occurred with one pool, all pools became unavailable. A combined system is not uncommon for small facilities or facilities with limited plantroom space but naturally present their own complexities.

The primary reason for the extensive upgrade at Oaks Glenelg Liberty Towers was due to the inadequacies of the water treatment system; in recent years it no longer met the water turn overrates required by SA Health for commercial pools and spas. The options to bring it into line with current standards included:

• Increasing the size of the inline filters and pumps to bring the turnover rate up to SA Health Requirements, or
• Separate the three pools into individual systems, meaning smaller filters and pumps can be used and still meet the water turnover rates.

The decision to separate the systems was chosen despite the limited space in the plantroom. This also allows for works to occur on one pool or system without interrupting the service and availability of the other pools.

The renovation was completed in two stages:

1. demolition of existing infrastructure,
2. Installation of additional hydraulics creating individual systems, and new infrastructure.
