Mungala Resort
Ken’s Bore – Western Australia

Situated 125km from the nearest town, Mineral ResourcesMungala Resort in Ken’s Bore was designed to raise the standard of accommodation and facilities of typical of mining villages, with a focus on health and wellbeing. The aquatic facility includes a fully engineered concrete 50m commercial swimming pool structure, competition-length lanes, tiled finishes, LED pool lighting, heating systems and extensive pool accessories. The system also incorporates salt chlorination, automated chemical dosing, hydrostatic auto make-up water control and automated pool cleaning, ensuring safe and consistent water quality with minimal manual intervention.

Many challenges presented themselves throughout the duration of this project. Coordinating trades and logistics in a remote location, ongoing ease of operation of the plantroom systems, providing an outstanding aesthetic without compromising on durability, the list goes on. Thanks to nearly 40 years experience, a highly planned and coordinated project management approach was adopted to best manage long lead times of equipment, labour requirements, and the ever changing climate of remote Western Australia.

Several modern construction approaches were incorporated to improve reliability and operational efficiencies. A key innovation was the use of 3D digital modelling and clash detection to coordinate the complex plantroom systems prior to construction. This process ensured that mechanical, hydraulic and electrical components could be installed efficiently while minimising construction delays. The project also utilised hydrophilic waterstops and specialised joint sealing systems within the reinforced concrete pool shell. These materials expand when exposed to moisture, helping to prevent water ingress through construction joints and improving long-term structural watertightness.

The result is a facility that successfully meets the client’s brief by combining robust commercial engineering with resort-style recreational amenity, ensuring long-term reliability in a challenging remote environment.
